The Walking Dead Comic
Is a monthly black-and-white US comic book series chronicling the travels of Rick Grimes, his family and other survivors of a zombie apocalypse.
First issued in 2003 by publisher Image Comics, the comic was created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore(who was later replaced by Charlie Adlard from issue #7 onward, though Moore continued to do the covers through issue #24.)
The series received the 2010 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series at San Diego Comic-Con International. A television series bearing the same name premiered Halloween 2010 on AMC. The series has inspired a Kirkman-approved full length novel prologuing the comic book's timeline.

Plot
Shot in the line of duty, Cynthiana, Kentucky police officer Rick Grimes wakes from a coma in the hospital to find his town overrun with walking corpses. Rick learns from fellow survivors Morgan Jones and his son Duane that the government told people to find safety in Atlanta, Georgia. Rick travels to Atlanta in search of his wife Lori and son Carl. He meets a scavenger named Glenn, who takes him to a small survivor camp outside the ruined city, where Rick reunites with his family.
After a fatal zombie attack on the camp, Rick criticizes its leader, his former police partner Shane Walsh, who also had an affair with Lori before Rick came. Shane pulls a gun on Rick, but is shot dead by Carl. Now de facto leader, Rick decides the survivors need to find a safer home. Upon meeting Tyreese, his daughter Julie, and Julie's boyfriend Chris, Lori reveals she's pregnant, but doesn't know if the father is Rick or Shane.
Rick’s early settlement attempts are disastrous. Donna, mother of twins Ben and Billy, is killed after the survivors move into a gated neighborhood infested with zombies. A farmer, Hershel Greene, invites the group to stay on his land, where Glenn strikes a relationship with Hershel's middle daughter Maggie, — until zombies kept in the barn break free and kill two of Hershel's children. The group's fortunes improve when they discover an abandoned prison with a zombie-proof fence.
Joined by four surviving inmates, Hershel, his remaining family, and a few friends meet along the road, Rick’s group fortifies the prison against zombies. In a suicide pact gone wrong, Julie gets shot by Chris, but then reanimates as a zombie and gets shot again by Chris. After a vengeful Tyreese kills Chris, the group learns that you don't have to be bitten or scratched to become a zombie, but can reanimate when you die without head trauma. After Rick goes to Shane's resting place to kill his reanimated body, danger comes from within: a psychotic inmate murders Hershel’s two youngest daughters who soon gets killed by a vengeful Maggie, Rick kills another inmate during an attempted coup against his group, and one inmate decides to leave his fate to the zombies. As the last surviving inmate Axel and katana wielding survivor Michonne are welcomed by the group, Allen, the twins' father gets bitten and dies from a long battle against blood loss from having his infected limb amputated. Increasingly erratic and brutal as he struggles to keep order, Rick steps down as the group’s leader, replaced by a committee run by him, Hershel, Tyreese, and the group's oldest and wisest member Dale.
Rick, Glenn, and Michonne, leave the prison to investigate a nearby helicopter crash and stumble upon Woodbury: a survivor town ruled by an insane tyrant called The Governor, who kills other groups of survivors to take their supplies and keep their severed heads as trophies. When his visitors won’t tell him where they came from, he imprisons them, cutting off Rick's right hand and forcing Glenn to listen to him sadistically raping Michonne. The Governor eventually allows the three to escape, hoping to tail them back home. But on her way out of town, Michonne captures, tortures and mutilates the Governor.
The prison dwellers prepare for a reprisal attack, but slip into complacency and distraction after weeks with no sign of Woodbury forces. Lori gives birth to a girl and is named Judith. Dale gets bitten on the leg but lives through having it amputated and gets a wooden peg to replace his leg. Glenn marries Maggie and “adopts” Carl's girlfriend Sophia after her mother Carol commits suicide. Dale and his 40-year younger girlfriend Andrea adopt the twins. Rick and Hershel are admiring the courtyard vegetable garden when the Governor (having been revived former Army medic Bob Stookey) and a small army rolls up to the prison fence.
Despite their better weapons and larger numbers, the Woodbury forces take heavy casualties and retreat. Convinced they will return, Glenn, Maggie, Sophia, Dale, Andrea, and the twins flee in Dale's RV. Michonne and her lover Tyreese are captured while attempting a preemptive commando strike on Woodbury. Michonne escapes into the wasteland but the Governor executes Tyreese outside the prison gate before launching his second assault.
The Governor’s forces use a tank to break down the fence and massacre the prison dwellers, killing Hershel, Axel, Lori, Judith, and many others. Rick and Carl flee to a nearby town. Zombies pour in through the broken fence and surround the Woodbury forces. One of the Governor’s soldiers Lilly Caul, shoots him in the head for making her kill Judith, before his army runs out of ammo and presumably perishes.
Rick and Carl reunite with Michonne and those who fled in the RV. These few survivors of the prison massacre wander until they join up with a trio headed to Washington, D.C. One of them, Eugene, claims to be a government scientist in radio contact with survivors in the capital.
Maggie attempts suicide over the death of her family. Rick and Abraham, a U.S. Army sergeant traveling with Eugene, bond during a supply run to Cynthiana as they confess the killings they’ve each committed to survive. Upon returning to Cynthiana, Rick encounters Morgan, but discovers Duane became a zombie. Though he is extremely grief-stricken, Rick allows Morgan to join the group.
Ben becomes mentally unstable and kills his own brother. Ben is later secretly killed overnight by Carl. While mourning the twins' deaths Dale gets bitten again and sneaks into the forest to die alone, but is kidnapped by a group of cannibals known as the Hunters, who eat his leg before he dies. Rick and the other adults find, kill and mutilate the Hunters to avenge Dale and everyone else they've eaten. A priest who recently joined the group, Fr. Gabriel Stokes is the only person among them appalled by their brutality.
On the outskirts of Washington, Eugene admits he is actually a high school teacher and has no contact with the government. Washington is overrun like other cities. But the group is approached the same day by Aaron, a recruiter for a peaceful walled-off town of about 40, the Alexandria Safe Zone.
Worried the Alexandrians have forgotten the dangers of the wasteland, Rick gradually asserts authority over them. As town constable, he secretly carries a gun and disobeys Alexandria's leader, Douglas, to intervene in a domestic dispute. After Rick beats down the abusive Pete Anderson, Pete tries to kill him with a knife but accidentally kills Douglas' wife Regina instead. With Douglas' permission, Rick executes Pete, but the gunshot alerts a group of bandits to Alexandria. After defeating the bandits in Alexandria, Douglas admits Rick is a better leader and steps down.
The gunfire during the bandit attack attracts a herd of zombies, who surround and break through Alexandria’s wall, killing Morgan, Pete's wife Jessie, and her son Ron.The surviving residents retreat to their houses while zombies flood the town. When Rick and Carl get surrounded by zombies, Douglas tries to help them, but accidentally shoots Carl in the eye before he is killed himself. Rick carries Carl to Dr. Denise Cloyd, Alexandria’s last surviving doctor, then returns outside and — with Michonne and other residents — destroys the entire herd. The victory convinces Rick that zombies are a manageable threat if everyone puts their issues aside and work together, and he resolves to rebuild civilization at Alexandria.
Carl wakes from a coma with amnesia. Rick quashes a small rebellion against him but forgives the transgressors. Andrea confesses she loves Rick, but he mostly spurns her advances, until he admits he returns her feelings.
Paul "Jesus" Monroe, who claims to represent a nearby community known as the Hilltop Colony of about 200 survivors, offers to trade supplies with Alexandria, claiming he already does so with several other survivor groups in the area. Fearing a trap, Rick imprisons Jesus and prepares Alexandria to defend against an attack. But he soon has a change of heart and decides to trade with Jesus' group. Once arriving at the Hilltop Colony, Ethan, a Hilltop resident attempts to kill the leader Gregory for an enemy named Negan, until he is killed by Rick. Jesus reveals that Negan is the psychopathic leader of a group known as the Saviors who clear out zombies but take half of a group's supplies as payment. Jesus asks Rick to help him eradicate the Saviors so they can live in peace, and he accepts.
The Alexadrians manage to repel two Savior attacks but Abraham gets killed by Savior lieutenant Dwight. While returning to the Hilltop Colony with a small group to ask for help, Rick gets ambushed by Negan, who beats Glenn to death with a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire as punishment for killing his men. Before leaving, Negan demands that Rick hand over half of Alexandria's supplies soon. Once returning to the Hilltop Colony, Maggie and Sophia decide to remain there as it was Glenn's last wish that they stay for their safety and Maggie's unborn child. With Jesus by their side, the group returns to Alexandria, where Dwight has been captured. Pretending to be scared and giving authority to Negan, Rick releases Dwight and has Jesus secretly follow him to find more information on the Saviors. Though he gets captured along the way, Jesus escapes.
Thinking his father is scared to do anything, Carl sneaks into a Savior truck and kills many Saviors using Abraham's rifle, but is stopped by Dwight. Negan takes a liking towards Carl for his hard-headedness and lets him go to Rick, proving he can be reasonable. Jesus decides they need help from another large survivor community known as the Kingdom. As Rick meets "King" Ezekiel, they are approached by Dwight, who claims to want kill Negan for for what he's done to him and his wife Sherry and offers to reveal Negan's secrets.
While preparing to battle the Saviors, Jesus discovers Hilltop patrolman Kal ratted out the attack plans on the Saviors to prevent anyone else from dying. While Rick and a small group make plans at the Kingdom, Negan comes to Alexandria to collect half of its supplies. He is approached by Douglas' son Spencer who wishes Negan to become Alexandria's leader and kill Rick. Disgusted by Spencer's cowardliness, Negan disembowels him, irking Rick. After angrily giving Negan half of Alexandria's supplies, Rick stages an ambush with the Alexandrians and prepares to kill Negan, but Negan reveals he has Savior snipers surrounding them, leaving Rick cornered. Sensing the danger, Jesus and Ezekiel come to the rescue, forcing Negan to flee, as he now plots to battle Alexandria, the Hilltop Colony, and the Kingdom for their desire to kill him.

Season 1 (2010)
The Walking Dead (season 1)
The series begins with sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes' being wounded in a shootout with armed criminals. He awakens weeks later from a coma in an abandoned and badly damaged hospital. Upon leaving, Rick discovers a post-apocalypticworld overrun with zombies (or "walkers", as they are often referred to in-show). Rick also discovers his wife and son are missing, and he encounters two survivors — Morgan Jones and his son Duane — who explain the situation to him. Acting on a rumor the two had heard, he arms himself and begins a perilous journey to Atlanta, Georgia, where the CDC is said to have set up a quarantined safe-zone in the city. Upon reaching Atlanta, he soon discovers the city has instead been overrun by walkers.
A few miles outside the city, Rick's wife Lori and son Carl have been hiding from the walkers with Shane Walsh, Rick's partner and best friend, who has fallen in love with Lori. They have established a camp with a small group of fellow survivors. After being rescued from Atlanta by members of the group and reunited with Lori and Carl, Rick assumes command with Shane. A band of walkers eventually attacks the camp and kills several people. Most of the survivors flee to seek aid from the CDC, one family sets off on their own to find their relatives, and Jim — who sustained a walker's bite — was left on the road, at his request.
In the CDC, all but one staff member, Dr. Edwin Jenner, have either fled or committed suicide. Dr. Jenner explains that his research into the infection has not yielded a cure, and he has not been in contact with anyone for a long while. Lack of fuel for the emergency generators soon initiates the building's safety protocols, which will trigger an explosion designed to destroy the facility and prevent the escape of deadly diseases. Jenner and Jacqui, a member of Rick's group, decide to stay and end their struggle. Dr. Jenner whispers something into Rick's ear, and the group escapes just as the CDC is incinerated in the explosion.

Season 2 (2011–12)
The Walking Dead (season 2)
The second season begins with Rick and his group of survivors escaping the CDC. They decide Fort Benning will be their next destination. Along the way, they encounter a traffic jam of abandoned vehicles on Interstate 85. The group loots several vehicles but is forced to hide under them as a large herd of walkers approaches. A walker chases Carol's daughter, Sophia, out from her hiding spot and, with another walker, pursues her into the woods. Rick finds her but loses her again after drawing off the walkers. During the search for Sophia, a hunter named Otis accidentally shoots Carl. To get help for him, Otis leads Rick and Shane to a large, isolated farm owned by a veterinarian named Hershel Greene, then helps Shane look for medical supplies at the local high school. After getting them, Shane injures his leg and sacrifices Otis to the walkers so he can get away. The survivors then move to the farm while Carl recovers, trying to coexist with Hershel's family, but dangerous secrets and disagreements over leadership cause tensions to rise. Lori is revealed to be pregnant (she is not sure whether Rick or Shane is the father), and Glenn builds a romantic relationship with Maggie, Hershel's eldest daughter. Glenn also discovers the barn is full of walkers, some of whom are Hershel's family members. After Shane releases the walkers to be exterminated, Sophia emerges from the barn, as a walker, and Rick reluctantly shoots her.
Hershel disappears to grieve for his family. Rick and Glenn find him drinking at a local tavern, where they meet two other survivors. The situation rapidly turns sour, and Rick kills the two men in a gunfight. The dead men's group quickly finds and opens fire on Rick, Hershel, and Glenn at the bar. The noise attracts a large herd of walkers, and one of the attackers, Randall, is injured and left behind. Rick and the others take him back to the farm, where they realize Randall is likely to reveal the farm's location to his former group. As Rick and the others deliberate about what to do with Randall, a walker fatally wounds Dale, forcing Daryl to euthanize him. The group later conducts a search for Randall, whom Shane had secretly released and murdered in the woods. Daryl and Glenn find Randall — as a walker — and kill him. Daryl concludes that Randall died from a broken neck (rather than a walker's bite or scratch) and subsequently reanimated.
Meanwhile, Shane and Rick confront each other — the former having planned the fake search so he could murder Rick. Rick gets the upper hand and stabs Shane in the torso, killing him. Carl arrives just in time to see Shane reanimate as a walker and shoots him down. The gunshot attracts a large herd of other walkers, who quickly overrun the property. In the ensuing battle and escape, Jimmy and Patricia are devoured, and Andrea is left behind. Andrea survives on her own and is later rescued by ahooded woman accompanied by chained, armless walkers. The remaining survivors regroup but are forced to make camp when their vehicles run low on gasoline. After hearing of Randall's fate, Rick finally reveals what Jenner whispered to him at the CDC: every survivor is infected with the walker virus. As the group questions Rick's leadership later that night, a large prison looms in a pan out of the final scene.

Season 3 (2012–13)
The Walking Dead (season 3)
The third season begins several months after the group escaped the farm, and Lori is in the final days of her pregnancy. The group stumbles upon an overrun prison and sets about converting it into their new home. While trying to clear the prison of walkers and searching the place for supplies, Hershel is bitten by a walker, and Rick is forced to amputate his lower leg. They soon find several surviving inmates who have been trapped in the cafeteria. While Rick, Daryl and T-Dog help clear a separate cell block for the inmates to live in, most of the prisoners are killed, allowing the remainder — Axel and Oscar — to join Rick's group. A walker breakout later splits everyone up: T-Dog is bitten in the struggle and sacrifices himself to save Carol, while Lori goes into labor and insists that Maggie perform an emergency Caesarean section to save the baby. The operation kills Lori, and Carl is forced to shoot her to prevent reanimation. After several days of mourning, Carl and Rick name the baby Judith.
Meanwhile, Michonne and Andrea are taken to the town of Woodbury, a safe haven from the walkers. They meet The Governor, the town's leader, and learn that Merle Dixon — Daryl's older brother — has taken refuge there as well. Michonne is immediately suspicious of The Governor and the settlement and decides to leave, but Andrea refuses to go with her. Merle is ordered to hunt down Michonne but only manages to wound her; he subsequently captures Maggie and Glenn while they are out scavenging. Michonne, who witnessed the abduction, eventually arrives at the prison and then guides Rick, Daryl, and Oscar back to Woodbury on a rescue mission. The team saves the couple, but Oscar is killed, and Daryl is captured. Michonne stays briefly and attempts to slay The Governor; she kills his undead daughter Penny (whom The Governor had kept chained in a back room closet in his apartment) and stabs him in the eye with some broken glass during a scuffle. In the aftermath, The Governor calls an assembly and publicly accuses Merle of treason, reuniting him with Daryl in front of the angry mob. Rick and Maggie come back and rescue them, but after regrouping outside of town, Daryl decides to leave with Merle, as Rick won't allow Merle to join their group.
Back at the prison, Carl meets another band of survivors — led by Tyreese and his sister Sasha — and shelters them. Rick returns, but while speaking to the newcomers, he hallucinates and sees Lori, causing his sanity to crack in front of everyone. He expels Tyreese's group, which finds sanctuary in Woodbury. The Governor and a small team attack the prison the next day, killing Axel and breaching the outer fence before retreating. Merle and Daryl, having decided to rejoin Rick's group, return and help him fight off attacking walkers. Rick and Carl, with Michonne in tow, return to the Grimes' hometown to gather weapons. There, Rick finds Morgan again and learns Duane was killed by his reanimated mother, whom Morgan couldn't bring himself to put down. Instead of joining Rick, Morgan chooses to stay behind.
Andrea arranges a meeting between Rick and The Governor, which results in The Governor's declaring a truce if Michonne is handed over to him, though secretly he plans to slaughter the prison group anyway. Andrea discovers the plot and attempts to escape to the prison, but The Governor captures her. Merle learns of the deal and, doubting Rick's willingness to follow through, kidnaps Michonne on his own. Merle and Michonne talk, and Merle has a change of heart and releases her. He goes on to foil The Governor's planned ambush and is killed. Daryl then finds Merle reanimated as a walker and is forced to kill him.
The Governor stabs his former advisor Milton and leaves him locked in a room with Andrea, to die and reanimate. He then leads an assault on the prison, but Rick's group stages an ambush and repels the attack. When the frightened Woodbury soldiers suggest leaving the prison alone, The Governor guns most of them down. Rick, Daryl and Michonne find Karen — the massacre's sole survivor — on their way to Woodbury to finish off The Governor; Karen convinces Tyreese and Sasha to allow them in when they arrive. They then find Andrea, who had killed the zombified Milton but not before he bit her. Andrea uses Rick's pistol to commit suicide with Michonne by her side. The season ends with Rick's group returning to the prison along with the remaining Woodbury survivors, while The Governor's whereabouts remain unknown.

Season 4 (2013–14)
Main article: The Walking Dead (season 4)
AMC announced on December 21, 2012 that The Walking Dead had been renewed for a fourth season. A 16-episode season, the series Entertainment Weekly called the "greatest thriller ever produced for television' will air in two parts with Season 4, with the first eight hours kicking off in October 2013 then returning in early 2014 with the final eight episodes.

Zombies
The series has not explored the cause of the zombie outbreak. The character Eugene claimed it was a government-engineered virus, but he turned out to be lying.
As is typical in zombie fiction, the Walking Dead’s zombies relentlessly hunt and eat humans. Even a small zombie bite causes a fatal fever that kills in hours or days, depending on the victim. Amputating a bitten limb can sometimes prevent the fever. A zombie bite itself does not cause zombiism; since the outbreak, every corpse becomes a zombie regardless of how it died, with the only known “cure” being to destroy the brain.
Simple exposure to zombie body fluids is not fatal. The Governor kept his undead daughter in his house and fed her parts of other humans. A group of cannibals cooked and ate Dale’s zombie-infected leg without becoming ill, though it is unclear if uncooked zombie flesh could be fatal.
Zombies in the series move slowly and are not especially dangerous except in large numbers or with the element of surprise. Rick's group has observed zombies too weak to move.
Rick’s group classifies zombies as either roamers or lurkers, the former category being more likely to venture toward a loud noise in search of human prey.
Zombies follow and mimic each other, which can result in enormous herds traveling together, "walking nonstop, following a sound they've all forgotten," as Abraham put it.

Makeup
Greg Nicotero is an executive producer and the key special effects makeup artist on the series. Each walker is put through "zombie school" and learns how to move like zombies. There are three levels of zombie makeup: Hero, Midground, and Deep Background. Hero zombies are featured walkers and are completely made over from head to toe. Midground zombies get highlights and shadows on the face, but do not get close enough to the camera to require full makeup. Deep background zombies often wear masks and are only meant to be used as a backdrop

Filming
The Walking Dead is mostly filmed in Georgia. The series is completely shot on 16 mm film. David Tattersall was the director of photography for the pilot episode with David Boyd as the director of photography on the remainder of the episodes. Production design is done by Greg Melton and Alex Hajdu. The effects team includes veteran special effects makeup designerGregory Nicotero, special effects coordinator Darrell Pritchett, and visual effects supervisors Sam Nicholson and Jason Sperling.

Marketing

The Walking Dead debuted during the same week in 120 countries. As part of an expansive campaign to advertise and heighten anticipation for the premiere, AMC and FOX International Channels coordinated a worldwide zombie invasion event on October 26, 2010. The stunt involved invading 26 major cities, starting with Taipei and Hong Kong, and ending in Los Angeles for the U.S. premiere, within a 24 hour period.
The show's official website released, just prior to the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con International, a motion comic based on Issue No. 1 of the original comic and voiced by Phil LaMarr. The site also posted a making-of documentary primarily about the first episode, as well as a number of other behind-the-scenes videos and interviews. In the documentary, comic series creator and show executive producer Robert Kirkman as well as artist Charlie Adlard say they are pleased with how faithful the show is to the comic and remark on the similarities between the actors and the comic's original character drawings.
Action figures of characters from the series, including Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon and a zombie Walker and Biter, were created for release in November 2011. The figures, which are manufactured by McFarlane Toys, are designed to resemble the actors on the series. Figures created to resemble the characters as drawn in the comic book were released in September 2011.

The Walking Dead's Worldwide Zombie Invasion
The Walking Dead‘s international broadcaster, Fox International Channels (FIC), will kick-off the stunts with overseas invasions beginning at daybreak in Taipei and Hong Kong on Tue., Oct. 26, and moving across the globe where the stunt culminates at the show’s Los Angeles premiere.
A week prior to the unprecedented global premiere of the show, AMC and FIC have planned to target one day multi-city events that will occur during morning commute peak hours. Taking direction from The Walking Dead‘s legendary make-up artist Greg Nicotero, hundreds of zombies will consecutively take over major cities worldwide during a 24-hour period.
The planned global outbreaks will center in and around the world’s major landmarks, including the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., Big Ben in London, the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul, the Acropolis in Athens and more. They will begin at daybreak in Taipei and Hong Kong, followed by Istanbul, Madrid, Munich, London, Sao Paolo, Buenos Aires, New York City and Los Angeles, among others. Attacking a total of 26 cities, each outbreak will be documented and shared with fans the world over as it happens.
