Katy Perry

Kathryn Elizabeth Hudson (born October 25, 1984), better known by her stage name Katy Perry, is an American singer, songwriter, businesswoman, philanthropist, and actress.

She was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California. Her parents where devout Pentecostal pastors Keith Hudson and Mary Perry. She is the second of their three children, and has Irish, Portuguese, English, and German ancestry. She has a younger brother named David (whose stage name is Hudson) and an older sister named Angela. Her mother's half-brother was director Frank Perry.
As a child, Perry attended Christian schools and camps. She was incorporated into her parents' ministry, singing in the church between the ages of nine and seventeen. She grew up listening to gospel music, and in an interview she said,
"Growing up I wasn’t really allowed to listen to a whole lot of what my mom would call, secular music,"
She learned how to dance in a recreation building in Santa Barbara, and she was taught by seasoned dancers and began with swingLindy Hop, and jitterbug. She took her GED during her freshman year at Dos Pueblos High School and decided to leave school in the pursuit of a career in music. Perry initially started singing "because [she] was at that point in [her] childhood where [she] was copycatting [her] sister and everything she [would do]." She took cassette tapes her sister Angela practiced with and rehearsed the songs and performed them in front of their parents. They suggested she take vocal coaching. She grabbed the opportunity and began taking lessons at the age of nine and continued until she was sixteen.

Katy Perry on Freddie Mercury

Katy Perry has hailed late Queen singer Freddie Mercury as a major influence on her recording career.
The pop singer would perform Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now' during her 'Hello Katy' tour in 2009 and now she has revealed that another of the band's best-loved songs, 'Killer Queen', helped inspire her to get into music.
"Queen's track 'Killer Queen' made me discover music and helped me come into my own at the age of 15," she told Cosmopolitan. "The way Freddie Mercury delivered his lyrics just made me feel like a confident woman; I'd say his fingerprint is all over me in general. And I also love the idea of a woman who reigns and has power, like Queen Elizabeth in the UK."
In June of last year (2012), Perry dismissed rumours that she had been cast as Mercury's former girlfriend Mary Austin in the planned biopic of the late frontman.

"I remember hearing Killer Queen by Queen and falling down in what felt like slow motion in my bed listening to the lyrics. And I thought to myself, 'Oh my gosh, this music is incredible. These lyrics speak to me...' and that made me want to be what I am.
Queen's track 'Killer Queen' made me discover music and helped me come into my own at the age of 15. The way Freddie Mercury delivered his lyrics just made me feel like a confident woman; I'd say his fingerprint is all over me in general."

Public Image
Rolling Stone ranked Perry 7th in its global Queen of Pop poll in July 2011. Men's Health dubbed her the "sexiest woman of 2013". She is a sex symbol and is known for her unconventional style of dress, which is often humorous, bright in color, reminiscent of different decades, and often includes food-related themes such as her trademark peppermint swirl bra. Her transformation into an artist began with fashion, inspired by American film actress Dominique Swain's portrayal in the 1997 film Lolita. She defines her fashion style as
"a bit of a concoction of different things".
Her fashion has caught the attention of designers.

In June 2008, a photo of her posing with a switchblade was criticised. The picture was defended as only an effort to give her a "sexy, harder edge". She later posed with a spoon, mocking the criticism.
Perry is Pentecostal and an avid supporter of gay rights. According to Dosomething.org, she voted no on Prop 8 (California’s Nov 4, 2008, amendment declaring that marriage is defined as a union solely between a man and a woman). Through Twitter and by performing at his rallies, Perry supported President Barack Obama in his run for re-election in 2012 due to his stance on same-sex marriage, and believing in "equal rights for all".

She’s also a popular television draw, appearing on countless talk shows, presenting and performing on the Grammys living out her lifelong dream of being lowered from the ceiling in a 600 lb. banana, serving as a guest judge on “American Idol,” a celebrity contestant on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and hosting MTV’s Europe Music Awards twice.

More often than not she’s adding to her trophy case at each stop, winning;
Best New Act at the Europe Music Awards,
Best Pop Video at the MTV Japan Awards
and International Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards.

When her single "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" from her hit album "Teenage Dream" went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 2011, the album became only the second album after Michael Jackson's "Bad" to generate five #1 singles. Perry became the first female artist to achieve this feat.

  • The covers of the first two singles were photographed by Emma Summerton in April 2010, and three other pictures taken by the artist were released to promote the album in July. The official album cover, which shows Perry lying naked on clouds of cotton candy, was painted on canvas by Will Cotton and released on July 21 via live webstream.
In North America, the album was packaged in several different ways. The explicit version of the album is available in a three-panel (six-sided) digipak, which has no text on the cover, aside from the Parental Advisory warning. This is also how the album is displayed if purchased digitally. The booklet contained inside this version reproduces the album's front artwork, without any labels or text. The explicit version is also offered in a standard jewel case, which has text printed on the booklet. The cover with text is mainly used for releases outside of North America, while international deluxe editions are available in the digipak, with a bonus disc included. A limited number of the albums are scented like cotton candy indicated by a sticker on the cover.
Artwork based on the album were also used by EA Games for the limited edition of the expansion pack "The Sims 3: Showtime" from the The Sims game franchise. It was released on March 6, 2012.

Its music has pop and rock styles with influences of discoelectronic musicfunkhousegothic rockHi-NRG, and hip hop; its themes focus on teenage love, partying, self-empowerment, and personal growth.

The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling 192,000 copies in its first week. It was later certified two times platinum by the RIAA; selling more than 2.7 million copies in the United States, and charting within the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 year end chart three years in a row and 5.5 million worldwide. The album and its singles earned Perry seven Grammy Award nominations includingAlbum of the YearBest Pop Vocal Album, and Record of the Year, as well as winning International Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2011.

Perry had also scored five number ones from Teenage Dream, making her the second artist in the chart's 53 year history to amass five number-one singles from one album over its first release after Michael Jackson achieved the feat with his album Bad, and the first female in history to achieve this milestone. Those 6 songs led Perry to spend a total of 20 weeks atop the chart. With the release of "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)" remix the following week, the song climbed one spot becoming Teenage Dream's 5th number one single.
Eight singles from Teenage Dream have topped the Adult Top 40 chart and have topped Mainstream Top 40 chart, both more than any other album in each respective chart's history. Additionally, with 7 chart-toppers from "Waking Up in Vegas", Perry broke the record for the longest streak of number ones on the Mainstream Top 40 set by Lady Gaga's first six singles. The singles also allowed Perry to have an unprecedented 69-week long streak in the Hot 100's top-ten, as well as a 71-week top-ten streak on the Airplay chart.

On March 31, 2012, Katy announced via Twitter that the film would be released during the weekend of July 4. A trailer of the film was released on April 2, 2012 on iTunes Store worldwide. Perry teamed up with Pepsito promote the film. The campaign offered consumers the chance to win trips to attend the world premiere of the film in Los Angeles, which included a live performance by Perry. In June 2012, she held the American premier in Hollywood where she shut down Hollywood Boulevard to put on a free concert. Perry also held and attended to further premieres in Sydney, Australia and London, England, where she walked the "Pink Carpet". On July 30, 2012, there was a premiere in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with the presence of Perry.

Katy Perry as Smurfette, the female of the Smurfs. About gaining the voice role, Perry said: "They had done a blind test where they took certain voices from previous interviews and matched them with the character. They liked my voice without even knowing who it was, and when they found out it was me, they thought that would work out. My personality was just a plus!"

She also has gone onto voice Smurfette in The Smurfs 2, which premiered in July 2013.

    2012
Katy Perry shows off her more sophisticated side in several brand new promotional shots for a campaign by hair brand GHD.

However this year (2013) GHD tried to cut ties with Katy Perry claiming she wasn't popular enough, as TMZ.com have reported, Katy Perry allegedly didn't bring in quite the sort of sales figures GHD were expecting.

The Jemella Group, the company behind GHD, have since tried to cut ties with the pop princess. But team Perry claim that the company still owe her $2 million, as her two year contract was in fact extended by an "oral agreement."

"Jemella's attempt to embarrass Ms. Perry by including defamatory statements about her in a public filing is shameful. They're backing out of the deal because of an ownership change, and just throwing shade to hide their bad faith." - Katy's Representatives.

Despite this both sides have agreed to drop their cases and refile. It is uncertain whether Katy Perry was paid the additional $2 million. (£1.3 million)

    Katy Perry and Eylure
    2012

The collaboration came about after Katy used Eylure lashes whilst on her California Dreams tour so it's only natural for the songstress to partner up with Europe’s top false lash brand and Eylure are understandably excited. 'As a false lash lover herself, Katy had a very clear idea of what she wanted to achieve and was involved in every step of the design process,' a spokesperson has revealed. 'We were keen to create a range of lashes that were a direct extension of her own personal style’.
As for K-Pez herself, she had this to say: 'I have worn Eylure lashes all the way through my tour and really loved them. When it came to having a range of my own, I wanted everyone to have a great experience with my lashes. As they have such an amazing history and great quality, Eylure was really the best choice for me to work with.'

(purple), and "It's M'thing, Ka-Ching!" (green).
"A Pop Art theme is my next natural progression from my cotton candy world." Katy said in a release. "I'm excited to apply these pops of blue, purple and peacock green to my new lash range. These are not just a futuristic fashion favorite; each one can really help bring out the color of your eyes! They're the new wave to bat your lashes."

Katy Perry and her range of Perfumes

Katy Perry chose to release her own signature fragrance, Purr, to add a personal touch and compete with other celebrities' perfumes; she cited Beyoncé Knowles and Kim Kardashian as examples. Having teamed up with Gigantic Parfums, she was actively involved in the development of her fragrance. She mentioned in an interview that she created the product because she loves cats. She has said that the fragrance is "basically me in a bottle. I think a lot of people go up and they go, 'That’s definitely Katy Perry. This is definitely Katy Perry’s perfume.'"
Katy (a self-described "lyrical-based person") decided the name "Purr" seemed natural since it sounded like "perfume", "perfect" and even "Perry". Working withFirmenich fragrances, she wanted to make a scent that would have a strong effect on people and something that was not reminiscent of other perfumes she had smelt.Nordstrom National Beauty and Fragrance Director Cheri Botiz said that while the pop singer was working with perfumers on Purr, the aim was to "capture the distinctive notes of her favorite perfumes". This is the pop singer's first fragrance, but she has said that it is unlikely to be her last.

    Purr
    'Earn my Affection'
Katy's love for cats influenced both her decision to create the perfume and its design, although further inspiration for the bottle's design came from other perfume products worldwide. Purr features a variety of scents, including citrus fruits. Released in November 2010.

    Meow! by Katy Perry
    'Be the Cats Meow'
The fragrance, released in December 2011 at Nordstrom, is a similar concept to her first fragrance "Purr".

    Killer Queen
    'Own the Throne'
The fragrance was released in August 2013, and follows her first two fragrances Purr and Meow!. The perfume comes in a box that is red with gold touches, and the bottle is shaped like a red ruby.
Killer Queen was described as a playful, sophisticated, powerful, edgy and delicious fragrance, that reflects the rebellious spirit of the singer. The fragrance, released in 2013 is a departure from the concept of her first two fragrances Purr and Meow!, which were cat-themed.

The fragrance comes in a red and gold jewel-shaped bottle, which was inspired by a queen’s sceptre. Perry told Elle that the perfume is aimed at "any woman with even the smallest mustard seed of power inside her who wants to bring it out." Although marketed as a women's fragrance, Perry said it suits "someone daring and different – a man or a woman" and described the scent as having a "touch of androgyny".

    Katy Perry and OPI
    2011

A professed nail fanatic, Perry always uses the red carpet to show off her daring nail designs and regularly posts pictures of her amazing nail art on Twitter
The Katy Perry Collection by OPI will include four glamorous shades: Teenage Dream (a pink glitter), Not Like the Movies (a sultry silver), Last Friday Night (a glittery blue), and The One That Got Away (an deep berry). But the breakout hit of the collection is sure to be Black Shatter, a revolutionary topcoat that creates a cracked/leopard pattern when applied over dried nail lacquer.

According to MTV Style, the Katy Perry collection was one of the Best Celebrity Endorsed Products of 2011.

So why does Perry think that she’s connected with a mass audience when the road to stardom is littered with the failed dreams of aspiring wannabes? “Because I’m just myself,” she says, “and that’s all people want. People want to hear artists who are themselves, but who do interesting things and sing about them in an interesting way that maybe they have tried to conceive but couldn’t. I get a lot of girls who come up to me and say, ‘When I heard ‘Thinking of You,’ I felt that way to a T, but I never knew anyone who could put my feelings into words.’ I think that’s why people find me relatable. Plus, anybody can meet me. I’m not distant. I’m very much the same person I was before the hit singles. I just have a schedule for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.”
